Fans knew there would be some growing pains, but to go winless in the first quarter of the season raises some questions about the direction in which the Carolina Panthers are headed. It certainly is devastating news for the Panthers’ playoff chances.

The Panthers are off to an 0-4 start under first-year quarterback and Alabama Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. BetCarolina.com – your source of North Carolina sports betting - utilized data from ChampsorChumps.us to see how every 0-4 team over the past decade finished and whether the coach was fired. Here are the results:

A Dim Road in 2023 for Carolina

Since 2013, there have been 24 previous teams to start the season 0-4. They have gone on to average 4.3 victories. No team that has started 0-4 has made the playoffs and just one – the 2017 San Diego Chargers - would finish above the .500 mark. Nine teams (37.5%) fired their head coach. Frank Reich is in his first year coaching the Panthers. To add to the bad news, the Panthers historically have been one of the NFL’s worst teams in October.

Carolina has lost all four games by 14 points or less, including a 21-13 home setback to the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday. Their previous three losses have been by 14, three and 10 points, respectively. However, for the next two weeks, it doesn't get any easier.

The Panthers visit the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions (3-1) Sunday (FOX, 1 p.m.).  BetMGM has installed the Panthers as nine-point and +340 moneyline underdogs.  The over/under game total is at 45 points. When mobile wagering comes to the state, be sure to have the BetMGM North Carolina promo code by your side.

The following week, the Panthers are at the high-powered Miami Dolphins (CBS, 1 p.m.). Two straight losses the Panthers can ill afford, but is a likely scenario.
